The people of Umunnekwu Agbo a community in Isuikwato Local Government Area was filled with jubilation and a surge of well-wishers and dignitaries who came from various parts of the state and representatives from the sponsors from Germany, for the grand opening of the One year free computer skills acquisition, solar energy installation and training program initiated by Divine Grace Positive Life Empowerment Initiative (DIGPLEI) Nigeria anchored by her foreign partner Positive Life Global Empowerment (PLGE) Germany, sponsored by NUE and ASB Germany with the approval of CIM/GIZ.

According to the project coordinator, Mr. Alban Ugoagha, the program was borne as a result of needs assessment done with the youths in this locality, which is aimed at providing the six communities in the catchment area skills that will help them begin successful careers.

In addition, the program is aimed at re-orientating the mindset of the youths from illegal or unproductive migration, which will help them make meaningful contributions to the social progress by becoming an asset to the growing economy. The program is meant for the young and the old in the communities.

The project is meant to last for a period of one year and it is aimed that the lives and careers of the mentioned target group is improved enormously in order to fit into the labour market.

Speaking on behalf of the host community, the traditional ruler of Nkalu Ukwu, Ummunnekwu Autonomous Community Eze Engr., Okey Augustine Udeh, said ‘this is a dream come true, today is the happiest day of my life and also for the members of the community. This is also a wakeup call to other indigenes of this community in Germany and other countries out there to come back home and help us build this community and provide jobs and employment to our youths”.

On his part the commissioner for education represented by the Executive Director Abia State Centre for Mass Literacy, Chief Godfrey Ihechinyere Akara, commended the initiators of the program and promised government’s support to ensure the sustenance of the program. He also added that this is in line with the present governments drive for youth empowerment and wealth creation. Adding that in the next couple of weeks, the Abia State Government has promised that an adult continuing education centre will kick off in the community.

Students of the program expressed their joy and gratitude to the initiators of the skills program, adding that they never imagined that they will have the privilege to acquire a computer skill in their community. They promised to take their training program seriously and at graduation become self-employed, while also being mentors for others.

The computer centre is heavily equipped, with twenty- one computers and all its peripherals,  a photocopy machine, scanner, spiral binding machine, laminating machine, power generating set, printers and a fourteen-seater bus which will convey the children from other neighboring communities to-and-fro the training centre.

Besides the computer training project there is an ongoing 18 unit panels solar installation and training which is part of ensuring that the youths in the community are gainfully employed.

The beneficiaries and the members of the community expressed their appreciation and satisfaction to God and the organisers of the program for deeming it fit to situate such a mega project in the community. They pledged to protect the installations and the equipment so as to ensure the project is sustained.
