Abia state Government says, it is poised towards restoring the beauty of the Abia Tower and areas around it.

The state commissioner for Environment, Dr. Aham Uko disclosed this Saturday during the October edition of the state cleanup exercise he monitored, stating that it is collaborating with the Abia State Environmental Sanitation Authority, ASEPA in that regard.

He disclosed that the state will ensure that public light supply from the Onhiya 33 KVA sub-station will be tapped into to illuminate the area, especially during the oncoming yuletide, warning people who deface the edifice indiscriminately with posters that if caught, will be subjected to the law.

He also disclosed a partnership agreement with Arab Contractors to clear the dump site along the Ubakala- Aba expressway through pulling down the wall they erected at the site and pushing the refuse further into the site, while the state government will be embarking on efforts to remediate all erosion spots/locations in the state.

The commissioner expressed his happiness that people are now coming out to participate in the exercise, but advised drivers coming into the state from other states to observe the exercise especially while passing through the city center.

He however said that the state government will allow those driving through the state to another, advising them to adhere strictly to this.

According to the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Environment, Henry Akujobi Nwachukwu, there was a “shift from the usual thing” as all residents were involved in the cleanup, noting that people from other states come to spoil the exercise for the state.

He regretted the level of apathy on the side of residents who do not listen to environmental sensitization by the ministry, which has been going on through the radio.
