OPINION: THAT OKEZIE IKPEAZU’S DOOMED KINDERGARTEN STRATEGY – By. Ferdinand Ekeoma
For close to one year, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu closed the popular and very strategic Brass Junction in Aba.
Initially, the junction was closed to vehicles in 2017 to avoid interruption of construction work on Faulks Road, so the closure was clearly understandable at that point in time.
Unfortunately since this year when the closure had become unnecessary, as no construction work was going on between the said junction up to Sacred Heart, yet the road remained closed, to the frustration and disillusionment of suffering citizens and business owners.
The citizens were confused as to the reason for the continuous closure, until a triangular kind of block-design was moulded there; signalling the governor’s intent carry out beautification work there.
Yes, the governor wanted to bring style like other governors, but he forgot that a grave can never be a dwelling place for the living no matter how beautiful it appears.
The governor didn’t realize that the construction of Faulks road which ab initio necessitated the closure was going on a snail speed; he didn’t think it wise to expedite action and ensure its timely completion before going to beautify Brass Junction.
Also, the Umungasi gutters which the governor’s “Aka Construction Company” spent more than one year building turned out to be a construction mishap as the entire road continued to suffer heavy flooding whenever it rained because, the incompetent manual labourers merely dug the gutters without installing heavy underground pressure pipes to create exit routes for flood.
The brass junction didn’t just create serious obstruction to motorists and business men and women, it later became a nuisance, storing very dirty stagnant water that made lives unbearanle for residents and passersby.
Out of anger, Aba people nicknamed the junction “Ikpeazu’s Fishpond”.
When it became clear that the closure no longer had any justification, many, including this writer predicted that Ikpeazu was preparing the area for cheap 2019 politics.
We predicted that that governor would reintroduce his ” Laughable Caterpillar Revolution ” to possibly create false impression of performance in the minds of Abians returning for Christmas, and he has just done exactly that. Isn’t the governor being smart by half?
Just two days ago, my friend the former Special Adviser to the governor on Public Communication, and now Director of Media and Publicity of Okezie Ikpeazu Campaign Organization, Onyebuchi Ememanka uploaded some very funny pictures showcasing the Brass Junction as “A beautiful spectacle”. For him, the reopening was a great feat, just as the scanty and substandard asphalting was a giant stride worthy of celebration”
I sympathized with my friend after reading his post, because the acceptance of that mediocre project doesn’t seem to be in tandem with what he made us to believe as one of his core values .
Having roundly criticized and condemned the mediocre projects and policies of Orji Uzor Kau and T. A. Orji, one would have at least expected him to come down hard on Ikpeazu, or better still maintain silence in the spirit of loyalty or alliance, rather than dignify that singular Ikpeazu’s leadership indignity.
Just yesterday, Sunday, 16th December, 2018, the governor deployed trucks and bulldozers to go and clear the hips of refuse that decorated part of Isi Gate and Umuwaya road in Umuahia.
The hips of refuse had decorated the area, which incidentally is the heart of the state capital for months.
The oozing odour made life unbearable, and to reduce the size of the mounting refuse, stop the health hazard it posed , as well as put a stop to the nauseating stench, traders had to put fire on it on several occasions. This created an atmosphere of untidiness and confusion, thus presenting the state capital as the true shithole the Ikpeazu administration has consolidated it.
Not until concerned Abians started posting pictures and videos of the refuse mess, that Ikpeazu’s government hurriedly sent his men on a face saving mission to clear the nuisance.
Let’s not forget that one of Ikpeazu’s campaign points in 2015 was that he did “Marvelously well” as the Deputy ASEPA Manager in charge of Aba zone during the inglorious era of Chief T.A. Orji. They even made a propaganda driven Biblical coinage describing him as a man lifted from the ” place of refuse and placed in authority”, but we knew he was actually handpicked and lifted by Papa Ukwu and Opara Ukwu because of his alleged anti people loyalty that made him give frightening kickbacks and returns to Opara Ukwu during the period under review.
So we were shocked when they peddled the false story of his performance in ASEPA, and did our best to puncture it, because we know that there was never a time Aba was habitable during “Papa Ukwu’s” regime.
Today, we have been vindicated, as the environmental situation in Umuahia and Abia in general has clearly shown that:
1.Ikpeazu never performed well in ASEPA as an appointee of T.A. Orji a.k.a Papa Ukwu, if he did, he would have replicated the same excellence now that he is the state Chief Executive
2. Ikpeazu is at loss as to why he is the governor, else, Opara Ukwu wouldn’t have asserted his infantile authority and insisted that traders continue to trade and constitute nuisance at Isi Gate against the wishes of the governor and Commissioner for Commerce and Industry.
3. That Ikpeazu has shown that he doesn’t mean well for Abia, as his few positive actions have either been motivated by political exigency or by public outcry/condemnation.
4. That his government cannot carry out the most elementary task of governance which a department in Umuahia North Council could execute without blinking an eyelid, shows he is a huge joke and an unmitigated disaster that must not be hallowed to befall the people again.
5. That the failure of ASEPA under Ikpeazu shows that there is a dangerous connivance of cruelty between Ikpeazu’s government and ASEPA which might have positioned ASEPA as a conduit pipe through which our resources are siphoned without any objections from the governor.
Having deployed his men to proceed to the Osisioma Six Pillars (Flyover) to insult our sensibilities and play Ludo with our brains, after paying a whopping 5 billion naira for the project, we thought they would have done the remaining abracadabra of clearing all salary and pension arrears before 31st December as they ridiculously promised. That’s very important to us because the lives of our people are involved, or has Ikpeazu realized that such kindergarten political strategy would not stop him from being bundled out of power by the angry Abia masses?
Just hope that the Ikpeazus wouldn’t be blaming Alex Otti for the governor’s failure to evacuate ordinary refuse in a state where he is audaciously insulting the sensibilities of our people with the rhetoric of reelection.
