OPINION: SUSPICION OVER T.A ORJI’S VISIT TO INEC HEADQUARTERS UMUAHIA- By. Ferdinand Ekeoma
Suspicion has continued to trail the visit of former governor of Abia state, Chief T.A.Orji to INEC Headquarters Umuahia earlier today.
The controversial former governor who stormed the INEC Headquarters around 11am, drew the attention of staff of the Commission who were seen discussing the visit in low tones, apparently wondering what might have motivated the visit.
Feelers from different quarters have it that the former governor whose two term tenures of eight year as Abia Chief Executive was marred by poor performance, has recently become more desperate to return to the Senate in 2019 following the decision of two formidable APGA Aspirants, Mr. Chima Onyekwere OON, from Umuahia South and a former ICAN President, Mr. Chidi Ajaegbu from Osisioma LGA to seek the APGA ticket and run for the same Abia Central Senatorial seat.
Opinion polls also indicate that many voters in the Senatorial District who are still very angry over the controversial emergence of Orji as their Senator in 2015, after his woeful performance as governor for eight years, have recently felt consoled and energized by the presence of Mr. Ajaegbu and Mr. Onyekwere who are considered astute corporate men with the requisite leadership skills to represent the people as their Senator.
Unlike T. A. Orji, who is known for petty empowerment schemes like sharing of Keke, motorcycles, pittance in cash donations etc, many believe that either Mr. Ajaegbu or Onyekwere is going to represent a paradigm shift from a pathetic old order, to a new order of productive and people-oriented representation through sound legislative engagements.
Chief Orji, who lost woefully in different wards that make up the six LGAs of Abia Central, especially in Umuahia North, South and Ikwuano, before questionably emerging the Senator through alleged manipulation of votes in Osisioma and Isialangwa North, is said to be heavily frightened by Mr. Ajaegbu’s presence, because the LGA that did the “magic ” for him in 2015, which is Osisioma, is Mr. Ajaegbu’s stronghold, where he is also grounded. This has given room to the suspicion that he might be planning something dangerous and undemocratic in a bid to return to the Senate.
Recall that Chief T.A.Orji, Olisah Metuh and others were behind the illegal invasion of INEC Headquarters in 2015 during the announcement of the governorship result when the APGA candidate in the election, Dr. Alex Otti OFR was cruising to victory, and violently forced the Returning Officer to unwillingly reverse himself.
Analysts belive that the invasion which is considered by Abians as one of the saddest moments in the history of the state, was a final act of desperation carried out by Orji to escape being hunted by the administrative ills he was leaving behind as governor, after his eight years tragic outing.
In one of the pictures above, the self christened “Ochendo Global”, can be seen replicating his trademark politics of money sharing to some INEC staff.
As a governor, he was said to have used this strategy of direct sharing of money to command loyalty and followership from thousands of unemployed youths and sterving-civil servants who had no employment opportunities or were owed as workers.
From all indications, the man whose tenure as governor still evokes horryfying memories caused by sack of non “indigenous” civil servants, collapse in infrastructure, fraudulent recruitment exercise in the civil service, kidnapping etc, is desperately preparing to stage a comeback to the Red Chambers amidst stiff opposition from his constituents and opponents who believe that Abia has had enough of him.
